Treasure in Troubled Times

The treasure you are searching for is near, just below the surface, ready to be revealed by the power of the Holy Spirit who resides within you.

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. John 16:13

Have you ever sat on the beach watching someone with a metal detector search for treasure? They search and search for hours and often come up with little more than a few quarters and bottle caps. I am sure every now and then there’s a big discovery but by and large the average metal detecting enthusiast I have observed spends a lot time and effort for minimal reward.

I wager many of us often feel this way, too. We search ardently for meaning, clarity, direction, and more … more of something. We dig deep within our own souls, we dig deep into philosophical writings and religious practices to discover something of value that will change our lives, lighten our burdens, and set us free. Like hungry treasure-seekers we exert our energy tirelessly yet often feel like we come up short, especially in times of trouble like these.

When Jesus came on the scene two thousand years ago he set everything on its head. He rocked his followers with a new way for man to find relationship with God. Rather than through ritual sacrifice and adherence to laws, he invited people into intimate knowledge of and personal relationship with God through Him. Outside of a relationship with Jesus and indwelling of His Holy Spirit, we are merely metal detecting with outdated equipped on a beach with little treasure to offer us. One day when he was speaking to a crowd he said,

Then Jesus exclaimed, “Father, thank you, for you are Lord, the Supreme Ruler over heaven and earth! And you have hidden the great revelation of your authority from those who are proud and wise in their own eyes. Instead, you have shared it with these who humble themselves. Yes, Father, your plan delights your heart, as you’ve chosen this way to extend your kingdom—by giving it to those who have become like trusting children.… And no one fully and intimately knows the Father except the Son. But the Son is able to unveil the Father to anyone he chooses…Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matt. 11:25-27 TPT, 28-30 The MSG).

Jesus invited the average, humble man out of the exhausting hamster wheel of religion and into the rest of real relationship with God Himself. The invitation extends to us today. We are all searching for more right now, whether its searching for more understanding, more direction, more grace, more freedom, or more power. The search doesn’t have to leave you exhausted and burned out friend. In fact the picture the Lord keeps sharing with me is that of a person metal detecting on a beach laden with treasure. The detector beeps with every step and the treasure lays just below the thinnest layer of sand. No more digging is required. The slightest brush of sand reveals the treasure!

Friends, we are equipped with the Holy Spirit who easily unearths – or reveals - the mysteries and treasure of God with ease and clarity. By the ministry of the Holy Spirit within us, we can truly live “freely and lightly” with continual revelation of the ways and will of God. This is a profound gift and it is one the Lord is eager to remind us of in this season rife with trouble.

We are living history right now. Trouble seems to be at every corner. Yet the word of the Lord is that by the power of His Spirit we can learn the unforced rhythms of grace experiencing the “more of God” we hunger for and seek tirelessly. The exhaustion and confusion is over, the rest and revelation is here. Treasure is just below the surface. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you to His treasure of rest today!

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.” John 16:13

Prayer

Lord you know the troubles I am facing right now. You know I am aching for more right now: more of You, more of your presence, more of your truth, and more of your rest. Holy Spirit come and fill me afresh and reveal your unforced rhythms of grace in a new way to me, today. Speak to me clearly and I will listen and receive the treasure that your word and your revelation always brings.
