Jesus the Waymaker

by: Kristine Wendt

We are heirs to a living way because Christ became the Way, the Method, for True Life!

A Call to Persevere in Faith || “Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:19-23 (NIV)

Recently, Pastor Greg preached a sermon entitled, A Living Way, that highlighted the need for each of us to have someone vouch for us that we may enter into heaven. More than that, we need someone to show us the way to live heaven. You can find a link to the sermon here.
Jesus is the WayMaker. Jesus the WayMaker makes for us a Living Way.

The WayMaker

The WayMaker is Jesus. By serving as the atoning sacrifice for all of the world’s sins, Jesus made a way for EVERYONE to enter into Heaven. Pastor Greg shared, “Heaven is barred to the sinners ...and the seemingly holy.”

“This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:22-24

The Woman at the Well (John 4) is a great example of one who needs a new Way Maker. The circumstances of her life give her license to dodge society and relationships as often as possible. The Woman at the Well carries her clay water pot (it’s heavy!), in the middle of the day (in the desert), just so that she doesn’t have to engage with the women of her community and be the recipient of their judgment. The only way she had known for life was way that didn’t work, but she had little sense for any other option. Picture the scene - the woman stands holding out her cell phone, ambiguously, but steadily scrolling just to look preoccupied so she didn’t have to make eye contact with this man sitting right in the path of where she needed to go.
What looked as an obstacle: a man sitting in her way, became to her a Man who was the Way for her, and for her whole town. This beloved Samaritan woman was so giddy about the ambush of grace that flooded over her when she met Jesus that she left her pot, ran to town, gathered all her friends, and brought them BACK to the well to meet Jesus.

A Living Way

Jesus made the way to the heavens and bridged the gap between our Abba Father and each of our hearts. We now have access to all of God, because of our big brother, Jesus.
Simply put what this means is that we are ‘Easter People’. We are no longer ‘Good Friday people’ or old covenant, law-bound people. We living in a family (Hebrews 2:11), a bridal paradigm (Revelation 22:17, John 14:3-4) and as part of a body (Ephesians 4:15-16). The metaphors all lead to the idea that we are IN, included, a part of something vast and wonderful, enjoyed and with a good-good-faithful Father.
We have a living way: Resurrection Life. Old things purged! New thinking rises up to settle deep down into our everyday love, our all-day, simple cohabiting with Holy Spirit.
