Church Charity
“Instead, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. Then at the resurrection of the righteous, God will reward you for inviting those who could not repay you.”
Luke 14:13-14
Jesus is Our Example
The Bible says that Jesus came to “bring life and bring it more abundantly.” So many times, the pain and problems we face are an incredible opportunity for a miracle-working God to demonstrate his power.
The Bible teaches that when we are at our weakest, God is at his strongest. In fact, it says His strength is perfected in our weakness. Certainly, for those facing poverty or suffering or both, it is a time of weakness.
We take seriously Jesus’ example for ministering to the needy. In addition to standing in prayer for those in need believing for God’s provision, Northlands is actively involved with two ongoing benevolence ministries…
Food Pantry Outreach
In 2010 Northlands Church started a food pantry to facilitate the distribution of food to the poor within our local area. This is a growing ministry that offers many opportunities for volunteers to help with its smooth functioning.
The food pantry outreach, called Grace Food Pantry, is a rewarding ministry in which to participate since it meets many immediate practical needs across the local community.
Rescue Atlanta Outreach
Another Northlands outreach to the needy is put into practice on the second Sunday of every month when church members travel to downtown Atlanta to volunteer at Rescue Atlanta, an Assembly of God church that is largely comprised of members who are homeless people living on the street.
Rescue Atlanta feeds around 500 or so people every Sunday morning as well as at other times during the week, and as a result are always looking for volunteers to help out.
To prepare and serve breakfast for 500 takes some doing! Various local churches send volunteers early on Sunday mornings to scramble hundreds of eggs, cook huge pots of oatmeal and grits, brew large containers of coffee and bake several big trays of biscuits to serve to hungry homeless people.
We are delighted to add Northlands volunteers to the mix to bring a hot meal and maybe a warm smile and an encouraging word to needy inner city people. Those who volunteer get to Rescue Atlanta early enough to do all that is needed and still get back to Northlands in time for the morning service.
Ministering to the Needy
Wherever you find the poor, the desperate, those in pain and suffering, and those who have lost hope, you also find Jesus. Our Lord does not give up on people. Jesus brings unfailing love and the power of his presence as he walks the hallways of hospitals where children with terminal cancer face death, sits next to a young man in prison whose life is ravaged by drugs, holds the hand of a single mother with children she cannot feed, and hugs a man and woman going through the anguish of losing a child.
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’”
Matthew 25:37-40
God is Faithful
Every day there are people all around us who need a genuine miracle to get through life’s challenges. It should be a given that we believe in a miracle-working God who delights in demonstrating his power and his great love for us.
Northlands seeks to create a spiritual environment where faith can flourish and grow, where people can believe God for anything. The Bible says God honors faith.
The Book of Hebrews says that without faith, it is impossible to please God. Although it rarely makes the news, God moves every day whether it’s healing the sick, bringing supernatural provision for those who in need, saving people from perilous situations, or other miraculous acts. We rejoice in these victories.
No matter what we face in life, nothing can separate us from the love of God and from the irresistible power of His grace through the shed blood of Jesus that cleanses us completely from all past, present and future sin and empowers us to fulfill the work He has prepared beforehand for us.
