Empowered with our words

by: Jenny Lynn

One of the ways we experience resurrection life is through our speech. What we speak, we give life to. When we declare the praises of God, the promises of God, and the Word of God we actually create life, hope, and faith in our own hearts and minds.

“Death and life [are] in the power of the tongue” Proverbs 18:21

Words matter.
What we say has a massive impact on what we experience. The Bible says that “life and death are in the power of the tongue.” We all know the death, pain, and destruction that words can cause to ourselves, our relationships and our circumstances. But, have you experienced the life, hope, and power that your words can unleash? As children of God, we are empowered to actually transform the world with our words.

We were created in the image of God, a God who speaks. The very first thing we see the Father do in Genesis is speak. The Bible tells us “God said let there be light” (Genesis 1:3). He continued to speak the land and creatures into existence. We read “God said … and it was so” over and over again in the first chapter of the Bible. I don’t think we could have a more compelling example of the power of speech than creation itself. God spoke and life came into being.

You and I were crafted with the same capability and power to speak. “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness’” (Genesis 1:26). We are children who carry our Dad’s likeness. Father God modeled how we can transform the world around us and renew our own minds through the power of speech.

Words Align.
One of the ways we intentionally do this at Northlands Church is through the practice of declarations. A declaration is a “positive, explicit or formal statement; a proclamation.” Declaring God’s Word is a powerful practice that brings our own hearts and minds into alignment with truth while also unleashing resurrection power around us. We align our words with God’s Word over ourselves or any given situation and declare truth where lies try to reign.

God loves to speak. He speaks to us through His written Word, He speaks to us individually through prayer, and He also speaks to us corporately as families or church bodies. At Northlands, we have taken the key scriptures God has given us as a church and the spoken words that we have received as a body through prayer and prophecy and written simple declarations about who God says we are. These declarations are our armour when the enemy hurls lies in our direction. If we don’t know who God says we are, it’s all too easy to agree with the lies.

Words empower.
What you say you believe, and what you believe you say. As a church family, we have found that when we align our speech with God’s Word over us we actually generate belief in His promises, disempowering the lies. Over the next several weeks, we want to share with you some of the declarations that we have formulated in hopes that you too can take hold of these truths and begin to speak them over yourself, your friends and your circumstances. As you begin to align your words with God’s, I promise you will experience an engagement with the resurrection power of God like never before.

Today’s Declarations:

I am made in my Father’s image.
I am empowered to speak life.
I represent my Father well as a conduit of His truth and power.
I continually declare the promises of my good, gracious, trustworthy Father.
I am a mouthpiece of truth to to my friends, my community and the nations.

Lord, thank you for making me in your likeness. Thank you for filling me with your Spirit and your ability to speak in a way that creates life and generates faith and hope.
