God’s Love Reaches to the Heavens

by: David Outten

God's love can be found in everything from the clouds over our heads to the things that come out of the clouds.

Your love, LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Psalm 36:5

I love clouds. I see them as God’s perpetual art show. I regularly delight in the show He’s created for me and thank Him for it.

Psalm 36:5 reads: “Your love, LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.” This verse expresses my feeling when I enjoy the skies above us.
I recently had delightful, strange, and wonderful experience of God’s love coming down from the heavens.

Some years ago we rescued a dog named Uriah. Given that my name is David this is a special blessing to me in that David gets to be kind to Uriah on a daily basis. I love him and take him for two walks daily. When walking him I quote the 23rd Psalm and stop on each line to discuss how that line applies to me that day. My walks with Uriah are a precious part of my day. I carry a plastic bag to pick up Uriah’s deposits. I often pick up other deposits and bits of trash on or near the street. I love the neighborhood I live in.

Thursday was my birthday. On the street that day was something that looked like a bit of trash. I stopped to pick it up. It was a popped balloon attached to a long string. It said “Happy Birthday.” I nearly cried. I was so touched.
I’ve never picked up a popped balloon before and to think that on my birthday there would be this message from the heavens waiting there for me. I took it as a message from God.
It may seem like a silly thing to write about, but since coming to Northlands Church I see God differently than I used to. Before, God was this all-powerful creator unhappy that mankind just won’t stop sinning. Now I see God as a loving Father. His desire is to delight me and for me to delight in Him. He wants a relationship where we enjoy each other and do things together. As we do things together his desire is to use me to bless others. He wants me to share with others how much He loves them.
Some may think my birthday balloon is a silly coincidence, but I can tell you this: I don’t think it was. I think is was just a sweet message from God and it did make my birthday happier. Whoever bought that balloon for their child had no idea how it would bless a 66 year old man.

Prayer

Father God, thank you for your tender love and the way you show it in the sky above us and in the simple things you do to delight us daily.
