And Grace Upon Grace

by: Terry Mitchell

Receiving the Abundance of God.

We all live off his generous bounty, gift after gift after gift. John 1:16 MSG;For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. John 1:16 NASB John 1:16; John 6:1-13

This opening passage in the Gospel John about the relationship of God to us is breath-taking. God, Himself, is abundant, generous, and overflowing, and He pursues us to give us His abundance – and much, much more.

This grand generosity of God is seen a few chapters later in the ministry of Jesus to the 5,000. He takes a few loaves of bread and a couple of fish, gives thanks for the provision, then distributed the bread and fish until the people “had as much as they wanted.” But even that fullness was not gift enough, for when Jesus had the disciples gather the remainder of the loaves there were twelve baskets full of uneaten bread. And of His fullness they all received, and grace upon grace.

Well, this bible story is great about the things that Jesus did a couple thousand years ago, but does God really pursue us with His abundance today? Absolutely! Fullness and grace upon grace is for today too.

One man testified the following:
My wife and I having been praying about our finances for years, and over the years every need that we have had has been met. Business started out strong at the beginning of this year and continued healthy until about April when my customer base seemed to dry up to a trickle of what for several months had been a steady flow. As my wife and I continued to pray in the dry spell, all our needs continued to be met – paying bills, taxes, and even taking a summer break. During this season of trickle, God continued to provide in May, June, July, and the first couple of weeks in August. Then on Monday of last week, I went to see a customer for a regular appointment, and I arrived to find him with a crisis. My work for him that day produced nearly two weeks income! My wife and I were ecstatic at the Lord’s rich kindness. His grace upon grace to us!

Where do you need to experience the generous bounty of God? His gift after gift after gift? Take your need to Him with the expectation that you will experience His abundance of provisional grace.

Prayer

Lord, you gave thanks and multiplied the loaves and fishes and fed the 5,000.  You lived this human life with an expectation of the Father’s abundance.  Free me from “just getting by” to walking in grace upon grace.
